GERIATRICS 2006 "International Congress of Elderly Health"
was organized by Turkish Geriatrics Society -Turkey,
with the scientific support and cooperation of
"International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics-IAGG",
"European Union Geriatric Medicine Society-EUGMS”

and
"International Institute on Ageing - INIA"
in April 02-06 , 2006.


Geriatrics 2006 “International Congress of Elderly Health” was held in Istanbul Hilton Hotel Convention Center with the participation of more than 400 delegates from 36 different countries. Attendees were composed of medical doctors and researchers from various specialities dealing with elderly health . Congress President, Academic Member of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine and Director of Hacettepe University Research Center of Geriatrics Sciences – GEBAM, Prof. Yesim Gokce Kutsal, M.D. said: “Various problems of elderly people have been discussed at this international congess with a multidiciplinary prospective. Concrete suggestions for solutions have been put out and studies will be made by Turkish Geriatrics Society in order to reflect these to the community”.

Topics such as depression in elderly, updates on Alzheimer’s disease, new treatment strategies in osteoporosis, diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson disease, dermatological aspects of aging, geriatrics in general practice, rationale use of clinical dansitometry in elderly, heart failure in elderly, hypertension in elderly, atherothrombotic vascular disease in elderly, the importance of vitamin D in elderly, new antipsychotics in dementia, telemedicine in geriatrics, ageing muscle, neuropatic pain in elderly, diabetes in elderly, osteoarthritis, peri and postoperative problems in elderly, interactions of diet & exercise, the burden of falls and fractures, aging female and male, neuropatic pain in elderly, systemic effects of menopause, ensuring quality of life and well being in old age: a social perspective, pseudoscience and geriatric pharmacotherapy, nutrition in elderly, needs in medicosocial services for elderly, quality of life in geriatrics, geriatrics in the 21st century and ways of ageing were discussed by the medical doctors from different specialties.

Scientific Secretaries of the congress, Assoc. Prof. Mahir Ozmen, M.D. and Assoc. Prof. Orhan Yilmaz, M.D. announced that, Geriatrics 2008 would be held in Antalya, Turkey to motivate young researchers to perform studies in elderly and to share knowledge and experiences of the national and international scientific committee members.
